TOI, AMRITSAR: The already sour relations between followers of Guru Ravidass and Sikhs could turn more bitter following Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh’s warning that no one would be allowed to take the bani (voice of Gurus) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib for scripting a separate religious book.

The title Guru (Gurmukhi: ਗੁਰੂ) is fundamental to Sikhi. The core beliefs of Sikhism are of belief in one God and in the teachings of the Ten Gurus, enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (the present, living and eternal guru), having all knowledge, wisdom and authority in all spheres of life.

Gurmukh (gur= Guru; mukh= face), is a word employed in Sikh Scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, in several distinct shades of signification. Gurmukh is also known as Gursikh. The gurmukh is, for instance the “Primordial Guru (God) who created all forms; it is He, too, who strings them into one thread — oan gurmukhi kio akara ekahi suti provanhara” . In the Gurmukh, the Guru instills the awe of the Fearless One, and through the Word shapes the mis-shapen (minds).

In another sense, gurmukh is the God-conscious being or the God-inspired man who, imbued with the Word, is crowned with glory at the Lord’s portal — “The Gurmukhs are honored in the Court of the Lord – gurmukhi hari dari sobha pae”.

London: One of London’s most important gurdwara, housing priceless religious books and swaroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, have been burnt in a suspected racist attack in Britain, a news report said on Tuesday.
Eye-witnesses on Tuesday said that a man, who entered the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat in East London, managed to escape just before flames were first seen.A group of women, who had spotted the intruder, tried to put out the raging flames in one of the holiest parts of the gurdwara, which was built at Bow in 1979.
Most of the gurdwara’s roof collapsed and worshipers fear all but one of its eight holy books have been destroyed, the ‘Evening Standard’ newspaper said on Tuesday. Eye-witnesses described the suspected arsonist as being black or mixed-race. A worshiper said he had noticed racist graffiti on one of the gurdwara’s outer walls in the past few weeks.
A criminal investigation has been launched and police and fire investigators are treating the blaze as suspicious. The building, which dates back to 1854 was formerly a synagogue and before that a chapel. The London Fire Brigade confirmed that 75 per cent of the building and the roof had been damaged by the fire.
“Police are treating this incident as suspicious,” a Metropolitan police spokesman was quoted as saying by the British daily.
Gurpal Singh, an eye-witness who visits the gurdwara regularly, said the attack was carried out “deliberately”.
“Somebody did this deliberately. A man came in and got to the temple’s holiest area. He was interrupted by one of the women, but managed to get away. As he ran out, the place went up in flames. Everyone panicked. The women tried to put out the fire, but it was too fierce,” Gurpal, an IT worker from Chingford, was quoted as saying by the British paper.
35-year-old Gurpal said the women managed to save one of the holy books but the flames took hold before they could get to the other seven.
“I can’t describe how important those holy books were to the Sikh community,” he added.
Kulvinder Singh Virk, 26, another member of the gurdwara, said: “This is very personal for us. It’s as if a member of our family has been burnt to death.” Kamaljet Kaur, a 24-year-old from Stamford Hill, said her aunt was in the temple when the alleged arsonist struck.
“The women thought he was a robber. It was only when they got upstairs that they discovered the fire raging,” she said. More than 50 firefighters battled the flame for almost eight hours after being called just after 2 p.m. yesterday, the report said

Every religion has its own beauty and way to achieve god. As far as Sikhs go we follow Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The bani of Barah Maha which starts from Ang 133 of Guru Granth Sahib Ji in the Maajh Raag Fifth Mehl(by Guru Arjan Dev Ji), Fourth House says that the month of Chet (March 14) marks the start of year.
Here is a shabad on Maajh Raag by Prof. Surinder Singh Ji:
So, wishing all of you a bright and blessed time ahead.

In 1911 A.D., King George V visited Delhi and a grand Delhi Darbar was held at Delhi. Maharajas (rulers) of Sikh states requested Sant ji to lead the procession of Sikhs on this occasion. Seated on an elephant in the holy presence of Guru Granth Sahib, he sang the Gurbani Shabad when his elephant passed by the British King. The theme of the shabad was “No other King or Raja can be equal to Almighty God because all these worldly rulers exist only for a very short span of time and indulge in falsehood” On an enquiry by the King, meaning of the Shabad was explained to him. On hearing about him, the King was very much impressed by the noble and radiant personality of Sant ji.
During a religious discourse (Katha) at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, Delhi, he was bitten by a poisonous snake. Despite best possible medical treatment, then available, Sant ji left his mortal frame and merged with All prevading God on 1st Feb. 1927 A.D. at Sangrur. He was cremated at Mastuana Sahib, 5 kilometres away, in the presence of mamoth gathering of his followers and devotees. Thus an era of religious revivalism in Sikh history came to an end. But his memory and achievement s will ever remain alive in the hearts of millions of his fellow religionists.
Sant Attar Singh laid great emphasis on the spread of education and founded large number of Sikh Schools and Colleges. He always insisted on education blended with lofty principles of love, compassion, humility. and higher values in life. He took active interest in the affairs of Sikh Educational Conference. On the request of renowned National leader, Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, Sant ji laid the foundation stone of Banaras Hindu University at Varanasi in 1914 A.D. Pandit ji was so much impressed by the towering personality of Sant Ji that he wanted that every Hindu family should have least one member as a Sikh.
Sant ji helped in the construction of many Gurdwaras and Holy tanks. He was responsible for constructing a magnificient building and holy tank at Gurdwara Dam Dama Sahib, Sabo ki Talwandi, in Bathinda District. He also got constructed huge buildings for Gurdwara and educational centre, known as Gur Sagar institution, at Mastuana in Sangrur District of Punjab.
He always preached meditation and noble human qualities of love, compassion, humility and selfless service. He used to say that all the problems faced by Sikh Panth will be resolved if all Sikhs get up early in the morning (Amrit Vela) and meditate on Wahe Guru NAM after taking bath. He spread message of love emphasising oneness of God and Universal brotherhood of all human beings.
At a time when Sikh Panth seemed to be on the verge of extinction as stated in the beginning of this article, he unleashed a massive movement of Amrit/Dharam Parchar to such an extent that he was responsible for baptising Amrit to about 14 lakh Sikhs in his life time. Many prominent Sikh personalities including Master Tara Singh, Sant Teja Singh ji, Principal Bhai Jodh Singh, Principal Bawa Harkrishan Singh, Principal Teja Singh, Malik Hardit Singh (former ambassador) etc. partook Amrit from Sant Attar Singh as one of Five Beloved ones (Panj Pyaras). He was embodiment of love and humility and practised what he preached in his life. He laid emphasis on meditation of Wahe Guru NAM and recitation of Nit Nem Banis early in the morning coupled with leading a true religious and pious life as per Sikh Faith.
Sant Attar Singh ji was such a great soul that he was, perhaps, the first Sikh personality to be affectionately awarded with holy title of a SANT by Sikh Panth/Sangat in the Twentieth Century.
