Sikhs celebrate 381st Prakash Gurpurab of Sri Guru Har Rai ji

Today sikhs all over the world are celebrating the Prakash (birth) Gurpurab of Dhan Sri Guru Har Rai Ji (ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ) who was the 7th of the 10 Gurus of Sikh Religion and was bestowed Guruship in1644 by Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji(the 6th Gurus).

Mool Mantar known to have be written by 7th Sikh Guru Har Rai Ji.

The brief highlights of Guru ji’s jeevan:

1. Continued the military traditions started by his grandfather Guru Har Gobind Ji
2. Kept 2200 mounted soldiers at all times.
3. Made several tours to the Malwa and Doaba regions of the Punjab.
4. Guruji’s son, Ram Rai, distorts Bani in front of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, after which the Guru is supposed to have said, ” Ram Rai, you have disobeyed my order and sinned. I will never see you again on account of your infidelity.” and prdered Siks not to mix up with Ram Rayias.
5. By punishing Ram Rai Guru Har Rai Ji sent a clear messages for then and sikhs generations to follow that nobody is allowed to distort bani fo Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (the present Guru of sikhs).

Before Guru Ji left his physical body(in 1661), he nominated Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji, as the next(8th) Guru of the Sikhs.

First Canadian Sikh soldier takes command of BC regiment

In a historical moment for Sikhs round the world, Lt.-Col. Harjit Singh Sajjan has become the first Canadian Sikh to assume command of a Canadian army regiment. In a ceremony, a change of command in the British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught’s Own) took place on September 11, 2011, at the Beatty Street Armoury in Vancouver,British Columbia, Canada.

Lt.-Col. Harjit Singh joined the British Columbia Regiment as a Trooper in 1989 and was commissioned in the Regiment in 1991. He was promoted to Captain in 1995 and to Major in 2005. He has served in Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as three deployments to Afghanistan.

Singh has been Mentioned-in-Dispatch and has two Chief of Defence Staff Commendations. He is also the recipient of the Commander-in-Chief’s Commendation and the Deputy Minister of National Defence Award for recruiting in the Sikh community.

Prior to joining army Singh was a police officer for 11 years with the Vancouver Police Department. He completed his last assignment as a Detective specializing in organized crime in the Gang Crime Unit. He also spent five years as a certified Technical Search Specialist with Vancouver’s Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Team.

Lieutenant-Colonel Singh is a Security Consultant lecturing to a wide audience, including specialised briefings on Counter-Insurgency Operations to both Canadian and US government agencies.

Singh is married to Kuljit Kaur, a medical physician and they reside in Vancouver with their daughter, Jeevut, and son Arjun.

Sikh students allowed to wear kirpan in Bedford(UK) schools

The administration at Bedford UK has issued new guidelines to head teachers and governing bodies that baptised (Amritdhari) Sikhs can wear a dagger – or Kirpan – with a blade of up to SIX INCHES. Kirpan is one of the five ”articles” of faith worn by Sikhs who have gone through the Amrit baptism ceremony.

The decision to allows kirpans was made when the members of Bedford’s Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) agreed to the guidlines developed by members of the Sikh community on Wednesday. Last year ,61 schools in United States of America had also allowed kirpan for Sikh kids.

The advice was issued after parents asked for clarification on the issue and states that there should be no objection to the practice of wearing the five Ks. (Kirpan(ceremonial dagger), Kara(a steel bangle), Kesh (unshorn hair), Kanga (a wooden comb) and Kachhera (special underwear).

According to guidelines, the Kirpan should be sheathed and out of sight and should be removed for PE lessons. Robin Rice, Head of RE at Biddenham Upper School, Bedford, and a member of SACRE, said that the Kirpan was not designed as a weapon.

”I have taught for years and have never had an issue with Sikhs wearing the Kirpan. It’s more like a knife than a sword. They are not made as weapons.” A spokesman for Bedford borough council said: ”There have been no incidents of Kirpan misuse reported in Bedford Borough schools.”

The advice from SACRE, which confirms the existing position taken by schools, is that the Kirpan can only be worn with the four other signs of the Sikh faith and schools will expect to remove it from any student not wearing all five symbols or who unsheathes it.

This is a historic decision for Sikhs because last year, a Sikh boy, 14, was removed from Compton School in Barnet, London, after governors ruled his 5in (12.7cm) kirpan was a health and safety risk. Via

First turbaned sikh becomes UK’s High Sheriff

Resham Singh Sandhu, a prominent Indian-origin multicultural leader selected as the new High Sheriff of Leicestershire, says he is honoured and a matter of privilege to serve the office.

Singh, who was awarded the MBE in 2002, migrated to Leicestershire from Punjab 38 years ago. He will be the first turban-wearing Sikh in the UK to hold the office of High Sheriff.

“It’s a great honour and privilege. This is going to set a good image of Great Britain. People can see that if you really work hard and deserve it, you can become a civic dignitary. It promotes multi-culturalism,” he told the media in Leicester.

He added: “My family in Punjab always worked with communities and to help other people. When I came over here I wanted to do the same. I didn’t do it because I wanted to be recognised for it I never expected that”.

Singh, a former chairman of Leicester’s council of faiths, was commissioned in 2006 as the Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Leicestershire. He will wear the same ceremonial uniform for the role of High Sheriff.

Singh will succeed Colonel Robert Martin in either March or April next year and will be expected to attend royal visits and be entitled to act as a returning officer in parliamentary elections.

The High Sheriff is a volunteer, unpaid and in office for one year, and is the Queen’s representative for law and order in the county, reports from Leicester said.

The Office of High Sheriff is the oldest secular office in the UK after the Crown. Leicestershire has had High Sheriffs since 1172.

Historically, responsibilities included tax collection, conscription and maintaining law and order, but today the role is chiefly attending royal visits and acting as returning officer in parliamentary elections.

Before the High Sheriffs take up office next March, a second ceremony will take place at the Privy Council in London.

At the ceremony, Queen Elizabeth, using a silver bodkin in a practice dating back to the reign of Queen Victoria, will prick their names on a parchment list to give their appointments the royal seal of approval.

Few months back, Sikhs celebrated the 300th anniversary of Khalsa Raj established by Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, a devout Sikh of Sri Guru Gobind Singh. It was celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm across the globe by Sikhs.

To cash in political mileage out of this religious event, Punjab Government also stepped in and announced Chappar Chiri will be developed into a historical site in the memory of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. Many welcomed it as a positive step as it would help in correct depiction of Sikh history.

But the inaugural ceremony of this memorial site has exposed the real motive behind this project. It revealed the true colors of ‘pseudo Akali’ Punjab Government which gave approval for the incorrect portrayal of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur as a Hindu Warrior.

Here are some shocking revelations that came up from a member of Young Sikh Leaders Organization who was at the inaugural function of this memorial site:

Baba Banda Singh Bahadur has been shown wearing a helmet in memorial site at Chappar Chiri Memorial site. There is no turban on the head of this Sikh hero.
The memorial site is supposedly for Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, but his name is nowhere to be seen. Instead the place has been named as Fateh Minar. (Minar or Minarets are distinctive architectural features of Islamic mosques).

The overall architecture of the memorial site is more like a Hindu architecture – Big base, narrow top. Moreover there is no talk about the Khalsa Raj at the site.
To add to the mockery, this Sikh historical site was inaugurated not by any prominent religious personality, but by a Hindu political leader and BJP Minister, Manoranjan Kalia. He insulted Baba Banda Singh Bahadur by addressing him as “Bairagi Bhanda Bhadur”.

US Army enlists 1st turbaned sikh soldier after 3 decades

Simran Singh Lamba has become the first Sikh with turban and beard to graduate as a soldier from the army of the United States of America (USA), nearly after three decades. Just hours after becoming US citizen today, Spc. Simran Singh graduated from Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

“When the bullets begin flying, it doesn’t concern anyone what religion you are. I bleed the same colour,” said Spec. Simran Lamba, 26, after his graduation ceremony from basic combat training.

Lamba said his black turban, full beard, unshorn hair and religious beliefs posed no problems during his 10 weeks of training.

“I am proud to be a Sikh, I’m proud to be a U.S. citizen, and proud to be a U.S. Army soldier,” he said.

The US Army already has two recently graduated Sikhs medical officers ( Tejdeep Singh and Kamaljeet Singh) , but it hasn’t had one in the enlisted ranks. Simran Singh was recruited because of his special skills in two languages Indian Hindi and Punjabi.

“The Sikhs are warriors in Indian culture. Once our soldiers heard that, they were all for him,” said Lamba’s battalion commander, Lt. Col. Bryan Hernandez.
