He mastered the art of embroidery and was handling father’s textile business, until one day during his visit to Hemkunth Sahib, the pilgrim centre of Sikh, idea of a holy walk dawned on Sukhdeep Singh. The 23-year-old was not taken seriously by his family members when he told them about his plan to go on a visit to as many Gurudwaras as possible in India on foot.
After a few sleepless nights and arguments with family members, Singh set out on his holy walk. Taking the blessings of the Guru Granth Sahib at the Golden Temple, on November 30, 2006 he has been visiting all prominent and not-so-prominent Gurudwaras on foot. Singh was in the city recently on a visit to Nanak Sahib Gurudwara.
“My family was against the idea. However, to me it was no less than a passion. I was inspired by the pilgrims of Amarnath, who walked miles to get a glimpse of God,” says Singh, a resident of Harsinghji village of Amritsar. “I would consider my journey successful if I could help people in my village realise the importance of Guru Granth Sahib and also help then quit addiction of alcohol. I pray for all humans. I felt home with very less money in hand and till date I have not faced any problem. Nothing could deter me from my resolution. Faith is very powerful and can make miracles happen,” Singh says.
He says he never had to starve. “People always offered me shelter and food and I never had to starve. Not just Sikhs, but people of all the places I visited also helped me,” Singh says.
He also had to face several hardships. He had walked continuously for two days and two nights, spent nights in a jungle and on roads, but all these strengthened his determination. “I have walked for 110 km continuously while on my way to Patna Sahib and in Chennai I had to remain awake for days and keep walking. But all this was in seva of the almighty,” he says.
He adds, “I also carry some embroidered wall hangings and if I am in a dire need of money, I put a stall somewhere or sell it to bhaktas in Gurudwara at minimal rate.” He is also in constant touch with family members and is looking forwards to meet them soon. It is not just a pilgrimage for Singh; he is all set to go back to his village to spread the message of peace and righteous deed. Future plan? “I will take up my family business and lead a simple life,” he signs off.
