TORONTO – Punjabi is set to become the fourth largest spoken language in Canada by 2011 after English, French and Chinese, according to Canadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.
The minister made the announcement Friday night after inaugurating the seventh Spinning Wheel Film Festival at the Royal Ontario Museum here that will feature films by or about Sikhs.

Gurdwara Sri Hemkund Sahib closed for winter

The famous Sikh shrine and Tap Asthan of Dhan Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj( Sri Hemkund Sahib) in Chamoli district was closed today for pilgrims for the winter.
The doors of the shrine were closed with rituals following which Granthis took the Guru Granth Sahib to Gurdwara Sahib in Gobindghat, for the rest of the winter.

British Sikh Policeman wins tribunal case on turban wearing rights

An employment tribunal ruled Gurmeal Singh, 31, will receive compensation by an employment tribunal, after being subject to “indirect discrimination” and harassment.
Gurmeal Singh, who joined Greater Manchester police in 2004, had objected to removing his turban for the course on religious grounds. In a long-running dispute with the force, a sergeant said: “Can you take that thing off?” the tribunal heard.
